The South Australian oyster season is at it’ best and head chef Sarah Whetstone has created a delicious new oyster treat oysters natural with pomegranate jelly and lime. |
A free City Bike station is located immediately behind the River Cafè and we highly recommend parking at the restaurant, taking a bike and cycling along the River Torrens to the Adelaide Writers’ Week and then returning for lunch or dinner. River Cafè is also a landing point for Adelaide’s only gondola taxi service and many locals and tourists enjoy a trip along the river before coming to dinner. click here for full details
Our sibling restaurant Red Ochre Grill also has a unique promotion during the Adelaide Festival with a late night supper club with our friend and colleague chef and writer Ann Oliver as guest chef. For more details click here

Sarah Whetstone brings her fresh approach to cooking
The Advertiser, in SA Weekend magazine.
“Sarah Whetstone attacks her cooking the way she does the punching bag at home. Precise recipes and measures aren’t for her. She’d rather start with some brilliant ingredients and a good idea, and go for it.
“I’d rather cook a steak than bake a cake,'” the head chef at The River Cafè confides. `“:I do like to cook desserts. But I’m probably more about getting in and getting my hands dirty.
It’s the hands–on approach she saw growing up in the South–East town of Millicent and watching her Italian grandmother make her own pasta, sauces and desserts. “I still try and match what the old Italian ladies do,'” she says. “Doing things by feel.”
It’s a long way from The River Cafè, with its view of the glistening waters of the Torrens.
Whetstone’s vibrant flavours are a perfect match, as she gives the Mediterranean a modern twist in dishes such as sardines wrapped in brik pastry or whiting on pomegranate tabouli.
Her husband, Dennis, is head chef upstairs at the Red Ochre and she admits that time together can be limited. `“He has a morning sleep in and gets to play with the dog. I’m up doing the hard yards,” she says.
After work, she “lets out a bit of aggression” by boxing or playing with her Siberian husky, Rocky. ”
